Google Nexus One

Ok, well the Nexus One came out on Tuesday. Pretty freakin awesome phone. There are tons of websites talking about it, reviewing it, and otherwise beating the subject to death. Basically the iphone killer Google was looking for. But that price tag is messed up. As a Tmobile subscriber I would love to get the subsidized one for only $179, but with my even more plus or is it just even more? Whatever, I don't qualify for the discounted rate. If the G1 and/or Cliq gets updated to 2.1, is the Nexus One even worth it to me for $530? And the Nexus One wouldn't even be covered by my insurance with Tmobile. So these are gonna be deal breakers with me. Love Android, love the Nexus One, but gotta wait on this one. Now that Motorola confirmed 2.1 coming to Cliq, that may be my next move.

New Google Maps 3.3

Okay, so I just downloaded the new Google Maps 3.3 on to my G1, and I must say I'm impressed. The navigation introduced last update is only getting better. I love the alternate route button that can be pressed, especially when traffic is shown along your route. And the new lab tools is sweet. Considering it's free, Google Maps is by far the best navigation app. I've tried all the free navi apps, and even paid $9.99/month for TeleNav. I'll be sticking with Google Maps for free. So now where does this leave the Cliq? It comes with TeleNav, and as soon as it gets its update will have access to Google Maps 3.3. Will MotoBlur end up dropping TeleNav or Google Maps? Does it make sense to have two navigation apps preloaded on a phone? I guess we will see...

Cliq or MyTouch 3G?

Here's my dilemma, ready to upgrade from my T-mobile G1 but don't know what to get next.

First off, I really don't want to have to leave T-mobile. I don't like Sprint. I have no faith in AT&T's 3G. And I'll have an AmEx black card before I'd qualify for or afford Verizon's plans. So T-mobile is my home unless something crazy happens.

Secondly, I'm not a big fan of the Samsung Behold 2. Looks good, screen is beautiful, just can't get with the touch wiz ui. And when will it update past 1.5? If ever? I don't even know what to say about the cube thing. Now, I'm not a big fan of MotoBlur but i can live with it. I'd just disable the parts I didn't need.

Third... now we get to the MyTouch vs. Cliq debate. Both beautiful phones. MT3G is sleek, light, and pocket friendly. Cliq is a little bulkier but still good looking with 3.5 mm jack and physical keyboard. But how much longer will MT3G continue to get updates and will the Cliq ever?

I'm a little burnt by Motorola, in an error of youth I bought a Sidekick Slide. My thinking was that Motorola would be the future of the Sidekick line. It was of higher quality than other Sidekicks of the time. But for whatever reason never got the video update that the LX got. I was young and dumb I guess. And I hated the feeling of having a phone so quickly become outdated. So if the Cliq is doomed to 1.5 forever, then I'll pass.

So in a way the MT3G is really my second choice. But it's a close second. I mean it's a great looking phone, will probably get Android 2.0, and is probably the "old reliable" of T-mobile's Android lineup. But I feel like if I have a chance to get an Android phone with a 3.5 mm jack and a physical keyboard, then I'd have everything.

Hopefully, the confusion over which Android phones will get updated will be over soon so I can upgrade. If it isn't, the "old reliable" will have to be my choice.
